About Development’s Pathway to Independence Programme
Launched in 2022, the aim of Development’s Pathway to Independence (PI) Programme is to support researchers active in developmental biology, stem cells or regeneration as they transition from postdoc to principal investigator.
The programme provides mentoring, training and networking opportunities. It also helps to raise the profile of successful applicants.
We aim to support researchers from a diverse range of backgrounds and from all parts of the world.
Eight researchers were selected to be PI Fellows in 2023.
This scheme is not currently open for applications. Details and deadlines for the 2025 programme will be added here soon.
What support is available to successful candidates?
- A tailored mentoring session or sessions with one of the journal’s editors to discuss career plans, job applications, etc.
- A two-day in-person meeting involving leadership training and feedback on a job talk from editors and peers
- Features in the journal (including an interview and contribution to a “Perspective” article) in order to help raise profile
- Networking opportunities with other PI fellows and (in future) alumni of the scheme
- A recording of a job talk will be hosted on the Node to showcase their work
- Support for training to help make the transition to an independent position

To apply to be a PI Fellow, you will need to complete a short application form via our grants portal. You will have to create an account if you don’t already have one, then select ‘Development PI programme’ from the menu on the left-hand side).
You will be asked to provide information about your research career to date and your future research plans. You will also need to upload a CV, publication list and letter of support from your current supervisor.
You will have the opportunity to select which of our editors you would most like to meet with.

The application deadline for 2024 is 31 January. Find out more.
All applications are reviewed by our team of academic and professional editors. Successful applicants will be selected based on their research record and future plans, plus the extent to which they are likely to benefit from the PI programme.
Applications from shortlisted candidates will receive an in-depth review by one or more Academic Editors.
A final selection will be made by a committee comprising our Editor-in-Chief, Executive Editor and a small number of Academic Editors.
