The Company of Biologists User Licence
The Company of Biologists has exclusive rights to the articles in The Company of Biologists’ journals, including the rights to reproduce, store, adapt, publish, distribute, display, communicate to the public and make available in paper, electronic and other formats/media. The Company of Biologists grants a licence to users to use the articles on the basis of the terms below. Authors also retain certain rights, as set out below.

Access through journal website | Free access to non-subscribers to read 6 months after publication. |
Teaching purposes | Use for bona fide teaching is allowed on the condition that it is non-commercial. |
Commercial use, including individual figure permissions | Permission requests via CCC. |
Third party article collections | Permission requests via CCC. |
Responsible text and data mining | Article full text, metadata and citations may be crawled for the purpose of an electronic analysis without special permission or registration, on the condition that it is non-commercial. Any reuse of content for this purpose shall be subject to the restrictions set out in this table. |
Author rights | |
Posting on author’s website | Any version, including final published PDF, provided that the article has already been published in the journal. Must link to the published article on The Company of Biologists’ journal website. |
Teaching | Use by Author and their academic institution for teaching students. |
Inclusion in thesis | Any version, including final published PDF, provided that the article has already been published in the journal. Must acknowledge and reference the original article, including DOI, and link to the published article on The Company of Biologists’ Journal website. |
Data contained in article | Upon publication by The Company of Biologists only. May use data and other information contained in the article in other articles of author. Must acknowledge and reference the original article, including DOI, and link to the published article on The Company of Biologists’ Journal website. |
Institutional repository, thesis repository, or PMC Europe | If mandated by funder. 12 months after publication unless otherwise mandated. Any version, including final published PDF. Must link to the published article on The Company of Biologists’ Journal website. |
