October 2024 – DMM Conference Travel Grants awarded to 39 recipients
In October, 39 applicants were awarded DMM Conference Travel Grants to attend a range of scientific conferences, meetings, workshops and training courses relating to the areas of research covered by the journal across 18 different countries.
October 2024 – Development’s Pathway to Independence Programme opening for 2025 applications soon
Launched in 2022, the aim of Development’s Pathway to Independence (PI) Programme is to support researchers active in developmental biology, stem cells or regeneration as they transition from postdoc to principal investigator.
The programme provides mentoring, training and networking opportunities. It also helps to raise the profile of successful applicants.
October 2024 – Grant funding round dates for 2025 announced
We are excited to announce we have released the funding round dates for all of our Grants:
- Scientific Meeting Grants to help finance a range of charitable activities including (but not limited to) meetings, workshops, and conferences in the fields relevant to our journals.
- As part of The Company of Biologists’ Sustainability Initiative we offer grants from our Fund for Innovations in Sustainable Conferencing to support innovative ideas that enable biologists to collaborate productively while minimising their impact on the environment
- Travelling Fellowships for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers wishing to make collaborative visits to other laboratories
- DMM Conference Travel Grants are aimed at early-career researchers wanting to attend scientific meetings, conferences, workshops and training courses relating to the areas of research covered by the journal.
- JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants for early-career researchers working in an area covered by JCS, who would like to attend a microscopy training course.
- Research Partnership Kickstart Travel Grants aim to support junior faculty staff to travel to another institution to initiate a new research collaboration and develop, write and submit a major grant application for collaborative research
- ECR Visiting Fellowships provide funding to junior faculty staff to attract an early-career researcher to undertake a defined research project in their lab for one to three months.
October 2024 – Scientific Meeting Grants awarded to organisers of 52 events in 17 countries
Scientific Meeting Grants were awarded to organisers of 52 events across the world in 17 different countries including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Tunisia, the UK and the USA. Scientific Meeting Grants are available to help finance a range of charitable activities including (but not limited to) meetings, workshops, and conferences in the fields relevant to our journals in order to encourage and support scientific interaction.
October 2024 – JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants awarded to five recipients
We are delighted to have awarded our second round of JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants to five early-career researchers who will be attending microscopy training courses over the coming months. Look out for their posts on FocalPlane to discover more about the researchers and the courses that they are attending!
September 2024 – Travelling Fellowships awarded to 32 recipients
In September, 32 applicants were awarded Travelling Fellowships from four of our journals – Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology and Disease Models & Mechanisms. Graduate students and post-doctoral researchers will be undertaking collaborative visits to other laboratories in 15 different countries.
July 2024 – Get an inside look into a successful, sustainable conference: new blog
A Sustainable Conferencing Grant was awarded to Chrissy Hammond (University of Bristol) and her co-organisers Lizzie Lawrence, Joanna Moss, Nikki Stevenson and Rabia Sevil for their event The Dynamic matrix: mechanics, ageing and repair Conference, a British Society for Matrix Biology (BSMB) meeting, our team were delighted to be welcomed at this event to have an inside look at the sustainable practices put into action.
July 2024 – New JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants awarded to four recipients
We are delighted to have awarded our first JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants to four early-career researchers who will be attending microscopy training courses over the coming months. Look out for their posts on FocalPlane to discover more about the researchers and the courses that they are attending!
July 2024 – Journal of Experimental Biology’s ECR Visiting Fellowship awarded to one recipient
A Journal of Experimental Biology’s ECR Visiting Fellowship was awarded to a recipient in Canada in July 2024. ECR Visiting Fellowships – launched as part of Journal of Experimental Biology’s centenary celebrations – provide funding to junior faculty staff (e.g. Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Group Leader, Principal Investigator) to attract an early-career researcher (e.g. graduate student or post-doctoral researcher) to undertake a defined research project in their lab for one to three months.

Research Partnership Kickstart Travel Grants – launched as part of Journal of Experimental Biology’s centenary celebrations – aim to support junior faculty staff (e.g. Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Group Leader, Principal Investigator) to travel to another institution (University, Research Centre, Non-Governmental Organisation or Industry Partner Organisation) for up to seven days to initiate a new research collaboration and develop, write and submit a major grant application for collaborative research.

May 2024 – New JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants
We are excited to launch our new JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants. Early-career researchers in cell biology can apply for grants of up to £1,000 to support their attendance at microscopy courses, including bioimage analysis courses. These training grants can be used to cover the registration fees, accommodation and/or travel costs and are designed to support those who wouldn’t otherwise have sufficient funding to attend.

Grants from the Fund for Innovations in Sustainable Conferencing were awarded to organisers of events in Argentina, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, India, The Netherlands, Portugal, the UK and the USA.

March 2024 – Travelling Fellowship from Development: new blog
To explore the protective role of isoprene in plant roots, Manuel Bellucci, a PhD student in the Department of Science and Technology for Sustainable Development and the Campus Bio-Medico of the University of Rome (Italy), used a Travelling Fellowship from Development to visit the Sharkey lab the Plant Resilience Institute of Michigan State University (MI, USA).
March 2024 – Development’s Pathway to Independence programme: our 2024 PI fellows
Development’s Pathway to Independence programme supports researchers active in developmental biology, stem cells or regeneration as they transition from postdoc to principal investigator. Following a successful pilot year in 2023, we are delighted to announce our second cohort of Pathway to Independence (PI) fellows.

October 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Cell Science: new blog
Yitong Xu, a graduate student at Duke University in the USA, used a Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Cell Science to visit Dr Thomas Mueller-Reichert’s lab at the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) in Germany, to conduct cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) observations of the Drosophila spindle.
September 2023 – Sustainable Conferencing Grants: new blog
A Sustainable Conferencing Grant was awarded to Dr Serena Stanga who came up with a solution that combined technology with alternative travelling, and which led to a reduction in the travel carbon footprint for her symposium at the 20th National Congress of the Italian Society for Neuroscience.
September 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Development: new blog
To develop her understanding of tissue regeneration, Grace Holmes, a master’s student from the Royal Veterinary College in the UK, used a Travelling Fellowship from Development to visit the Echeverri lab at the Marine Biological Laboratory in the USA.
September 2023 – Sustainable Conferencing Grants awarded to organisers of 11 events in eight countries
Sustainable Conferencing Grants were awarded to organisers of events in Argentina, Austria, Azerbaijan, Chile, France, India, Poland and the UK.

August 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Experimental Biology: new blog
To develop her own understanding of neural mapping, Federica Pizzulli, a PhD student from the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Italy, used a Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Experimental Biology to visit the Seuntjens lab at KU Leuven, Belgium. The lab was the first to adapt in-situ Hybridization Chain Reaction (HCR) to Octopus vulgaris.
August 2023 – Disease Models & Mechanisms Conference Travel Grant: new blog
Darshan Mehta, a PhD student studying the mechanisms behind skin cancer at the Tata Memorial Centre Kharghar in India used a DMM Conference Travel Grant to go to the 2023 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Stem Cells and Cancer – a meeting to explore cutting-edge research in the fields of cell biology and cancer.
August 2023 – Sustainable Conferencing Grants awarded to organisers of two events in two countries
Sustainable Conferencing Grants were awarded to organisers of events in India and Poland.

July 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Experimental Biology: new blog
Rocío Soledad Pazos, a postdoc from the National University of La Plata in Argentina, used a Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Experimental Biology to visit the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) in Belgium where she was able to investigate the impact of leachates on the environment.
June 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Development: new blog
Anja Bühler from the University of Trento in Italy used a Travelling Fellowship from Development to visit the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany to study the impact of brain asymmetry on behaviour in Medaka (Oryzias latipes).

May 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Disease Models & Mechanisms: new blog
To inform her project on human organoid engineering, Nore Van Loon, a PhD student from the University of Ghent in Belgium, used a Travelling Fellowship from Disease Models & Mechanisms to visit Michael Vaughan’s lab at University College Cork in Ireland.
April 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Cell Science: new blog
Using a Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Cell Science, Keying Zhu, a PhD student from Karolinska Institute in Sweden visited the University of California San Francisco in the USA for two months to work on a project focusing on neuronal susceptibility to neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis.

March 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Cell Science: new blog
Sofia Masuelli, a student at The Institute of Histology and Embryology of Mendoza in Argentina used a Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Cell Science to visit Tufts University in the USA. The grant enabled her to explore the bioelectric and epigenetic differences between left- and right-sided breast cancer, inside a cancerous MMTV-PYMT mouse model.
March 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Experimental Biology: new blog
Maeva Terrapon, a student from the University of St Andrews in the UK, used a Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Experimental Biology to investigate the ecology of killer whales alongside fellow researchers at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Canada.
March 2023 – Sustainable Conferencing Grants and Scientific Meeting Grants in action: new blog
With the help of a Sustainable Conferencing Grant and a Scientific Meeting Grant, the “Decolonising and Diversifying Biosciences Education” symposium at Robinson College, Cambridge in the UK was run in a fully hybrid manner, with inclusivity and sustainability at the forefront.
March 2023 – Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Cell Science: new blog
Using a Travelling Fellowship from Journal of Cell Science, Samanta Del Veliz, a PhD student at the Instituto de Histología y Embriología de Mendoza in Argentina, visited the Université de Montréal in Canada to investigate the role of 14-3-3 protein family in mesenchymal stem cell differentiation.
February 2023 – Sustainable Conferencing Grants: new blog
With the help of a Sustainable Conferencing Grant, the organisers of a British Neuroscience meeting in the UK were able to offer ‘Train over Plane’ travel grants. These grants reimbursed BNA members who chose to travel to the meeting by train, coach or carshare, rather than catching a plane..
February 2023 – Disease Models & Mechanisms Conference Travel Grant: new blog
Thanks to a DMM Conference Travel Grant, Jazib Shafiq, a PhD student at the University of Karachi in Pakistan, travelled to Germany to attend the EMBO practical course on metabolite and species dynamics in microbial communities.
