Jitske de Vries: We are delighted to announce that The Company of Biologists' three Transformative Journals have not only met their targets for Open Access growth in 2021, but they have exceeded those targets.
Claire Moulton: Development, Journal of Cell Science, and Journal of Experimental Biology were in fact the first journals ever to be afforded Transformative Journal status by Plan S.
Claire Moulton: Each journal aimed to grow their proportion of Open Access research content by at least 5% in absolute terms. Development in fact grew by around 10%, Journal of Cell Science by around 12%,and Journal of Experimental Biology by around 15%.
Claire Moulton: This Open Access growth was driven by our Read & Publish agreements, which allow corresponding authors at participating institutions to publish Open Access without paying an author fee.
Sharon Ahmad: There are clear author benefits to publishing Open Access in our journals. When we look at readership, for example, we can see that our Open Access articles receive at least three times as much usage in their first six months when compared with our non-Open Access articles.
Sharon Ahmad: We see a slight citation advantage and also boost when we look at altmetrics, which measure the online attention received by our articles.
Jitske de Vries: We have received fantastic feedback from our authors about our Open Access initiatives. You can find more information about our Transformative Journal status, Read & Publish initiative, and our comparative metrics on our website. Thank you.
