August 2024 – Ceasing print publication of our journals from the 2025 volumes
We are committed to ensuring our environmental impact is kept to a minimum and we are working hard to make sustainability a consideration in everything we do so have concluded that following the despatch of the final issues of our journals in 2024, we will no longer offer a print version of Development (ISSN 0950-1991), Journal of Cell Science (ISSN 0021-9533) and Journal of Experimental Biology (ISSN 0022-0949).
We are hopeful that customers who subscribe to the print only or combined print and online versions of our titles will continue to subscribe to the online only versions of Development (online ISSN 1477-9129), Journal of Cell Science (online ISSN 1477-9137) and Journal of Experimental Biology (online ISSN 1477-9145). June 2024 – The Company of Biologists announces move to a new submission system
All journals from The Company of Biologists are moving to a new submission system, called Editorial Manager. Editorial Manager is the leading cloud-based manuscript submission and peer review system for scholarly publications. We are making this change as we believe it will benefit authors, editors and reviewers and that it will provide an improved user experience. Use of the current submission system will be phased out, so manuscripts will only ever sit in one submission system. We are delighted to announce the renewal of our Read & Publish Open Access agreement with the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) from 2024-2026.

October 2023 – First institution in Uzbekistan joins our Read & Publish initiative
Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME) National Research University is the first institution in Uzbekistan to join our Read & Publish Open Access initiative via our agreement with Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL). Our agreement with EIFL enables corresponding authors at any institution in Uzbekistan (and 29 other countries) to publish accepted research articles Open Access without charge in our hybrid journals, Development, Journal of Cell Science and Journal of Experimental Biology, and from 2024, our two fully Open Access journals – Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open.
October 2023 – First consortium in Germany joins our Read & Publish initiative
We are delighted to announce a new three-year Read & Publish Open Access agreement with ZB Med – Information Centre for Life Sciences, our first consortium offer in Germany, January 2024-December 2026, via our German representative, Missing Link Versandbuchhandlung eG. August 2023 – The Company of Biologists showcased its Read & Publish initiative at IFLA WLIC 2023
Rich Blount and Sarah Logan attended the IFLA WLIC 2023 conference for the first time. The conference was held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and brought together over 3,000 delegates from more than 100 countries to discuss the latest trends and challenges facing the library community.
The Company of Biologists showcased its five peer-reviewed journals and ever-growing Read & Publish initiative, prioritising sustainability by providing environmentally friendly giveaways and hosting a prize draw, with the winner receiving ethical/sustainable items from ‘Sourced by Oxfam’.

March 2023 – The Forest of Biologists: our new bio-positive publishing initiative
We are excited to announce the launch of The Forest of Biologists, our new bio-positive publishing initiative that celebrates the contributions of authors and peer reviewers to our journals. For each published Research Article or Review article, a tree is planted in a UK forest. In addition, we are funding the restoration and preservation of ancient woodland and dedicating these trees to our peer reviewers. All trees are also represented in a virtual forest and, with each new piece of research, the forest grows.

March 2023 – 124% annual increase in the number of North American institutions participating in our Read & Publish initiative

January 2023 – Renewal of Read & Publish Open Access agreement between The Company of Biologists and IReL
Following the success of our first three-year Read & Publish Open Access (OA) agreement with IReL, we are delighted to announce that we have signed a renewal agreement from 1 January 2023 – 31 December 2025.

The Company of Biologists has been committed to Open Access publishing since 2004. Most recently, we were one of the first not-for-profit publishers to launch a cost-neutral Read & Publish initiative and our subscription journals were the first in the world to be afforded Transformative Journal status by Plan S.

Our Publisher Claire Moulton presented alongside David Prosser (Executive Director, Research Libraries UK), Colleen Campbell (Open Access 2020 and ESAC Initiatives and the Max Planck Digital Library) and Alicia Wise (Executive Director, CLOCKSS and Director, Information Power) at a LIBER session focusing on how libraries and consortia can support the OA transitions of not-for-profit publishers. Over 300 people attended the session and feedback was excellent.

April 2021 – The Company of Biologists launches new journal websites
Our five leading journals moved to the Silverchair hosting platform on Thursday 15 April, improving user experience and maximising discoverability for the biological community.
The move also means we can offer an improved experience for our library customers. The Silverchair administrator dashboard enables institutional customers to manage their subscriptions and download usage reports in one place. It also has an easy-to-use interface and a comprehensive user guide is available.

March 2021 – Transformative Open Access agreement with University of California
We are delighted to announce a new three-year Open Access agreement with the University of California. The agreement enables corresponding authors at all ten UC campuses to publish an uncapped number of research articles immediately Open Access in our three hybrid subscription journals (Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology) and our two fully Open Access journals (Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open).
Unlimited access to the journals and their archives from 1853 is also available as part of the agreement.
